Astronaut Chris Cassidy Shows Off Faulty Spacesuit (Part 1)

Aboard the International Space Station, NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy discussed the ongoing efforts to solve a problem with crewmate Luca Parmitano’s spacesuit during a downlink video July 30. Cassidy demonstrated the suit and discussed some of the troubleshooting activities to identify the problem that caused water intrusion in Parmitano’s helmet during a spacewalk conducted by the two astronauts on July 16.

  5. *Details about leaky space suit*

+NASA has released this video of Astronaut Chris Cassidy giving some
insight into what happened with the aborted spacewalk a couple weeks ago.
The news I saw about the incident did not really portray the seriousness of
the situation. We think of how water behaves on earth where a leak would be
recognized early and there would be plenty of time before the helmet filled
    up.

In space, however, water acts differently. There was already a significant
amount of water on the plastic piece of the helmet before the astronaut
(Luca Parmitano) even knew about it. And then, it didn’t take much more for
the water to start soaking his headgear and making its way onto his face.

To see the capillary action Chris Cassidy refers to, check out the wet
washcloth video that +Chris Hadfield made: http://youtu.be/lMtXfwk7PXg.
Jump to about the 2:10 mark and you’ll see the water spread along the
surface of the cloth onto his hands. Now imagine feeling the water spread
from the back of your head, into your eyes, and towards your nose and
mouth. This was a much scarier thing than I think most people realize.

  10. have you thought of maybe for quick fix a diaper for the back so if you
notice it you will have time to get back or maybe layers of a sham wow?to
coat the inside of the helmet? and a blow fan with a reservoir for the
fluid in zero g to collect the liquid ?
