What is Mold?
There are approximately 70,000 to 100,000 described species of fungi, including molds, mushrooms and yeasts. Molds develop from unique, microscopic seed-like structures called spores, which are not visible to the unaided eye. When spores settle on a surface under appropriate moisture and temperature conditions, they absorb water, swelling to 2-3 times their original size, and begin to form thread-like structures known as hyphae. The hyphae are like a root system that penetrates into or below a food source to feed and grow becoming visible to the naked eye. When the fungus grows and matures additional spores can be carried away on air currents, moisture droplets or insects and settle on other surfaces and start the cycle over again.

Can molds be dangerous to your health?
According to the EPA, “When moisture problems occur and mold growth results, building occupants may begin to report odors and a variety of health problems, such as headaches, breathing difficulties, skin irritation, allergic reactions, and aggravation of asthma symptoms.”
